Waterman Expedition - Permafrost on a Dry Lake Bottom

Waterman crosses permafrost on a dry lake bottom. When seasonal temperatures cause thawing in the thin topmost layer of permafrost, the surface cracks in a polygonal pattern. The remaining deeper layers of frozen soil (also called permafrost) or rock typically remain below 0°C through the year.
